Parenting Support:
NVC, NVR, and SPACE
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles we undertake. At times, the dynamics within families can feel overwhelming, particularly when navigating behavioural challenges, emotional struggles, or strained relationships. My parenting support services are rooted in evidence-based approaches, including Nonviolent Communication (NVC), Nonviolent Resistance (NVR), and the Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) programme. These approaches are designed to empower parents with tools and strategies to create a calmer, more connected, and compassionate home environment, while addressing specific challenges in a thoughtful and structured way.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC)
Developed by Dr Marshall Rosenberg, NVC is a powerful framework for improving communication and fostering understanding. This approach is particularly helpful in parenting, as it supports parents to:
-
Understand their own needs and emotions.
-
Recognise and empathise with their child’s feelings and needs.
-
Express themselves clearly and respectfully without blame or criticism.
-
olve conflicts constructively and collaboratively.Res
NVC promotes a deeper connection between parents and children, fostering relationships built on mutual trust, respect, and emotional safety.
Nonviolent Resistance (NVR)
NVR is an evidence-based approach designed to help parents regain a sense of authority and calm in their relationships with children, particularly in situations involving challenging behaviours such as aggression, defiance, or withdrawal.
Key principles of NVR include:
-
De-escalation: Reducing confrontation and reactive cycles.
-
Parental presence: Re-establishing a calm, consistent, and visible presence in the child’s life.
-
Support networks: Building a network of allies to support the family.
-
Reconciliation gestures: Demonstrating unconditional care and love.
Through NVR, parents are empowered to address difficulties in a non-confrontational, loving, and effective manner, helping to restore balance and harmony within the family.
SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions)
The SPACE programme, developed by Dr Eli Lebowitz at Yale University, is specifically designed to support parents of children struggling with anxiety or obsessive-compulsive behaviours. This innovative approach focuses on:
-
Reducing parental accommodation: Identifying and adjusting behaviours that inadvertently reinforce a child’s anxiety.
-
Building confidence: Empowering children to face their fears with less reliance on parental intervention.
-
Parental support: Offering parents practical tools to manage their own emotions and responses.
SPACE is a highly effective, research-backed programme that enables parents to create an environment that nurtures their child’s resilience and emotional growth.
